Letter: Public school board voters need to know of certain issues

By Letter to the Editor on October 1, 2025.

Dear editor,

For the information of fellow electors of the Medicine Hat Public School Board, I would like to draw attention to some concerns.

First, there is a problem with public access to MHPSD board proceedings. Past practice has had half, or more, of meetings behind closed doors. This is far out of proportion to closed meetings of other boards.

Secondly, is need for MHPSD Board meetings to be live-streamed as done by other boards. It is inconvenient for electors to attend board meetings to see business conducted. It is usual today to see the way elected representatives conduct themselves. Live-streaming facilitates that.

Thirdly, reporting in minutes of the MHPSD board must be improved. Often matters are recorded without elaboration. Stating that “Personnel Matter 001, or Legal Matter 001 was approved” tells an elector too little.

Finally, there is a problem of delegation of authority without requiring reporting of actions to the board. A case in point is Administrative Procedure 504 AP 004.

I hope this helps my fellow electors make their voting decisions.

Michael Seitz,

Medicine Hat
