Letter: Alberta Next panel a distraction of what Alberta needs Now

By Letter to the Editor on September 11, 2025.

Dear editor,

At the Alberta Next town hall meeting last week in Medicine Hat I observed a well-rehearsed dog and pony show masquerading as democracy.

Slick videos with questionable statistics condensed complex ideas into tidbits designed to delight and lead the UCP base gathered there. The intent was to show how separation from Canada was necessary for Alberta to succeed. The panel was all too willing to agree with all these infomercials presented, the moderator put aside any pretense of partiality.

Questions from the audience were limited to 45 seconds, and the few that did offer a challenge were generally glossed over.

So, for starters, we are asked to trust this government to take over our pensions. I think not. They have not been able to deal with the problems we have now, and yet they want more on their plate.

It is Alberta Now that needs addressing, not Next. The Next is just a distraction.

We now have the lowest level of spending per student in all of Canada. Education is underfunded.

We soon will have the lowest minimum wage in all of Canada. You cannot live on that.

We have the highest per capita measles spread rate in North America. And still you encourage vaccine hesitancy.

This is to say nothing of the mismanagement of the coal mining industry, the orphan oil well cleanups, the healthcare system shuffling, the AISH theft – and the list goes on and on.

The UCP has proven itself incapable of running Alberta properly as a province. Why would we think it could run Alberta as an independent, land-locked country? God help us all.

Sincerely,

Alan Matisz

Medicine Hat

Great comments Alan. My friends and I are all in our 80s and 90s and are all former long time conservative supporters and proud of it, yet we see nothing conservative about these Reformers treating Albertans like morons and getting away with it.
What is so disgusting is the lack of respect they show our children and grandchildren with the massive debt they are dumping in their laps and don’t care. Watching our fellow seniors believing every lie they feed them is very disturbing, and not surprising. They have a horrible reputation for being easy to fool as us former bankers know.
Re-electing Reformer Pierre Poilievre against the wishes of the conservatives in Ottawa proves how ignorant they are. Apparently praising criminal convoy truckers and Donald Trump and ignoring the billions of dollars they have cost Canadians and Albertans is okay with them.
Even polluting their farmland with abandoned oil wells is no problem for them until they find they can’t sell it and have to pay for the cleanup to be able to retire like we do in the cities. You can’t be any dumber than that can you?

Alan , Our family knew the Klein family starting in 1960 and I still haven’t forgotten that when Ralph was trying to become our premier his mother Flo told my mother that she didn’t think that he was capable of running this Province properly. Mum told her that no one in her family was going to support him and we didn’t. Mum said she wasn’t surprised.

When nurses were bawling their eyes out in my office when Klein destroyed their jobs, his father Phil said to me “ What is the matter with that son of mine Al? While he gives away billions in oil royalties he is forcing us to try to live without a proper healthcare system. This will cost some people their lives “. That exactly what it did and the lawsuits proved it.
One was almost my father after he had donated around $30,000. to the Alberta Conservative Party and Lougheed’s energy minister Bill Dickie was a brother in-law of one of my uncles. That’s how these Reformers rewarded dad.
Ralph’s daughter Angie was so disgusted by what he had done to Albertans she urged us to vote for the NDP and kick him out so we have tried, yet ignorant Albertans won’t let us get rid of this Reform Party insanity.

I helped 9 doctors and at least two dozen nurses relocate out of this province thanks to what Klein had done to them and not one wanted to go, they had family here.
One doctor said it best “ why should I stay and support my patients when my patients have refused to support me against this tyrant Ralph Klein “.

Nothing has changed we still see people supporting these Reformers and ignoring how they are treating our doctors, nurses and teachers so why should any of them stay and support them?

As a lawyer friend would say “You can bet the fools who don’t agree with you are easy to fool seniors and not man enough to handle the truth so don’t be concerned about how stupid they are”.
Unfortunately these are the fools who are putting our children and grandchildren in a horrible financial mess and they don’t care while we certainly do, don’t you?

Excellent points. As well, THERE IS VIRTUALLY NO PATHWAY for Alberta to separate. We are on treaty land that predates Alberta’s existence as a province. This government has no platform beyond grievance politics, because distracting from the things that matter at home is the only way they can stay in power. Keep the base outraged over non-issues, so they don’t pay attention to the crumbling healthcare, education, and economy. This government is failing everyone in every possible way, spending tax dollars on a travelling circus of nonsense and mistruths, instead of anything that would actually improve thelife of a single person.

When Ralph Klein did it the members were paid $780. Per gathering we were told, so you can well imagine what 15 of them are costing taxpayers to spread their lies. Yet many of our fellow seniors are believing every lie they feed them and they don’t care what it’s doing to our children and children’s future that’s how stupid they are, isn’t it?
Can you think of a better way to steal the peoples money and put it in the pockets of your friends? Treating Albertans like morons has always been their
Reform Party Mandate.
You know Lougheed or Mark Carney wouldn’t be doing it to the people they care about our wellbeing, these Reformers don’t.
