Dear editor, There’s an old Anne Murray song called, “A Little Good News” and recent stories in the News regarding Saamis Solar Park seemed like just a little bit of such. It’s great to know our city will hopefully be the owner and beneficiary of the largest solar power field in a Canadian city. In contrast, it’s hard to know where to start with all the bad news coming down the pike: – The UCP has opened up the Eastern Slopes of the Rockies to coal mining without public consultation; something that hasn’t been allowed since 1976. The hypocrisy is astounding considering this government is willing to block significant renewable energy development for the sake of “viewscapes.” – Danielle Smith and her cronies spent $2 million on a report about COVID-19 which the Alberta Medical Association has labelled “anti-science.” – Smith goes to Mar-a-Lago and Washington, D.C. to suck up to Donald Trump, and when he decides to impose tariffs anyway, she has little to say except: you (Canadians) better not impose counter tariffs on our oil and gas or you’re going to have a national unity crisis on your hands. Recently, Justin Trudeau warned us all that Trump is serious about turning Canada into the 51st State. Every time we try to meet his demands he adds something else: fentanyl enforcement (with outrageous claims like we killed 300,000 Americans), border security, increased military spending, open up Canadian banks and agriculture to the U.S, scrap the digital services tax and GST, etc, etc. You might agree or disagree with some of these things but the point is, he doesn’t get to violate our sovereignty by telling us what to do. If his constantly changing shopping list is not his true goal, what does he really want? He wants what many in the U.S. have wanted since the beginning: all of North America. Just like Putin with Ukraine, Trump and many other Americans see Canada as a phony state. If not for that silly line along the 49th parallel they could have all our rare earth minerals, oil, gold and fresh water. And with “leadership” like Smith’s, they just might get it, too. Can anyone imagine a referendum on Alberta separation which ends up close? Trump then declares a rigged election and moves the U.S. military into Alberta. If Alberta goes, the rest of the country won’t last long. So enjoy the little good news of Saamis Solar Park. Every day Trump is continuing to call us the 51st state and it’s not a joke. It’s blatant disrespect toward our country and our future, and it scares me. Gail Lawrence Medicine Hat 14
Sadly Albertans have only themselves to blame for their blind support of these Reformers who are hellbent on destroying everything our conservative hero Peter Lougheed created for us. There is no other oil rich area in the world that’s in the financial mess that we are in. Too bad you didn’t listen to us instead of hurling your sarcastic comments at us for not being as stupid as you, isn’t it?
