By Letter to the Editor on February 19, 2025.
Dear editor, I am writing to urge all concerned citizens to take immediate action regarding the proposed coal mine on the Eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains. This region, known for its pristine beauty and vital natural resources, is under threat from a project that could have devastating environmental and economic consequences. The proposed mine will endanger the water supply of countless communities along the Old Man River and the South Saskatchewan River – water that supports our daily needs, agricultural crops and habitats for endangered species. The long-term damage to our ecosystems, agricultural land and water quality cannot be overstated. Allowing a foreign corporation to profit at the expense of our environment and future generations is unacceptable. I encourage readers to take a moment to write to their local MLA, asking them to vote against the approval of this coal mine. Your voice can make a difference. In the coming weeks, we must stand together to protect our water, wildlife and agricultural lands from this harmful proposal. Please act now and make sure your MLA knows where you stand on this important issue. Ed Fredeen Medicine Hat 10
These Reformers are only doing what Reformers do. Deliberately destroy all the good our Conservative hero Peter Lougheed created for the good of the people and they don’t care what we think or who gets hurt in the process. Its why Alberta is in financial ruin and no other oil rich area in the world is. Gullible mindless Albertans, mostly seniors, allowing it to happen while they hurl sarcastic comments at us true conservatives for not being as stupid as them and trying to stop it.
Well said.
Thanks Dwayne I learned a lot from the former Conservative and Social Credit MLAs l knew when Lougheed’s energy minister was a brother in-law of one of my uncles. I lived next door to a lawyer for about 11 years and had coffee each week day morning with 3 other lawyers for about 5 years and they certainly taught me a lot also. Everything they taught me has happened and is happening. One of their major concerns was the destroying of jobs these Reformers are famous for and Smith and Poilievre are certainly demonstrating that, aren’t they?
I’m originally from a very large farm in eastern Alberta. I know how important water is for us all. Without water, crops can’t grow, livestock can’t drink, and we can’t eat. Peter Lougheed put in the 1976 Coal Policy to protect the mountains, the water and the environment from damage from these open pit coal mining operations. The UCP doesn’t care about that, and they want to make their rich friends even richer.
As a lawyer friend would say. “With only one person not agreeing with you out of a population of 67,000 you can bet he isn’t very smart, is he”.
