Letter: The newspaper continues to connect the community well in the 21st century

By Letter to the Editor on January 15, 2025.

Dear editor,

I have lived in Medicine Hat for two centuries – well, from 1958 to 2025!

The Medicine Hat News has been delivered to my door in all of that time, in the 50s to my parents’ house and ever since 1963 when I’ve had my own house (with my husband, Bert).

In the last number of years I appreciate it more than the first 30 years when I would skim it a few times a week. I am impressed with the coverage of local stories. I realize newspapers are much less significant now but there are often little gems of personal or group projects which wouldn’t be known if not for the Medicine Hat News.

And I know many good stories and events may be missed due to budget restraints with hiring reporters and fewer subscribers.

But – here are a very few examples of some of these headlines: From 2024: + June14 CORE Association celebrates 70 years supporting local individuals with developmental disabilities + November 23 Canine learners cross the stage at MHC.

Seven dogs graduated from a 13-month course in guide dogs. + December 6 MHPSD opens new dual-sport training facility, joint hockey and ringette academy + January 7 2025 local air cadets get rare up-close opportunity with major search and rescue aircraft, 15 air cadets get inside a CC-295 Kingfisher.

These are a few examples of significant local events which don”t make big headlines, the Flight Academy at Eagle Butte School, the Agricultural training at Irving School, the Skateboarders’ group trip to build a house in Mexico and many more.

Thank you to the team – editors, reporters and all at the Medicine Hat News. And happy New Year!

Evelyn Kleis

Medicine Hat

Editor’s note: Thank you for the kind words, Evelyn. We all at the News wish you and your loved ones a safe, happy and healthy 2025!
