Letter: Now more than ever, Truth Matters, Journalism Matters

Dear editor, As a former newspaper reporter, I endorse the News’ slogan of Truth Matters. Journalism Matters. We are longtime subscribers and just renewed for home delivery, so we’ve put our money where our mouth is. Truth and journalism are two pillars of our Canadian democracy, and I think they’re self-evident, but like the glaciers, trust in both are receding. It’s no secret that print journalism, now considered old-fashioned by many, is fighting to maintain readership and advertising revenue, which is the real lifeblood of a non-government supported newspaper. And now all traditional media, including radio and TV, is saddled with accusations of bias, so many people think traditional media don’t tell the truth. I think a recent example of truth not mattering anymore is the re-election of Donald J. Trump as U.S. president. I think responsible American journalists did their due diligence to expose Trump’s myriad lies, yet it just didn’t matter. I think the Canadian political winds are blowing the same direction and simple and simplistic slogans such as Trump used to win in the U.S. are and will be used by Canadian politicians to unfortunately convince uncritical Canadians to also abuse Truth Matters and Journalism Matters. What has us seniors so upset is the lack of respect these Reformers , trying to pretend they are conservatives, and their supporters show our children and grandchildren. They don’t care about the massive debt being dumped in their laps or what global warming is doing to the planet and their future. Poilievre wants to Axe the Tax and ignore the fact that it was created by Conservatives to help our oil executives show the world that they do care about Global warming and want to help try to do something about it and 27 countries agree.
Lawyers warn that these seniors who are blindly supporting them could find themselves in financial ruin. If Poilievre is elected and helps Smith gain control of our Canada Pension Plan there is nothing stopping her from using the excuse that we have received far more than we ever put into it and cancelling our payments. We know we have and aren’t going to give Poilievre that opportunity to help her and you going to?
Who’s truth? Maddow’s, Hannity’s, Joe and Mika’s, Whoopi’s?? We’ll all be better off when MSM is put to rest.
