Letter: You should watch what you wish for

By Letter to the Editor on September 17, 2024.

Dear editor,

I have the concept of a plan to save Canadian taxpayers a lot of money.

First, fire all members of the Canadian Senate and all their staff; huge savings there and would anybody miss them?

Second, fire all members of the Canadian House of Commons and all their staff; more even huger savings and we’d get used to it pretty quick. Nobody likes those appointed and elected freeloaders anyway and we can get all the information we need from our cell phones.

Third, fire the Governor General and all the Lieutenant Governors and their staffs from all the provinces. Do they really do anything anyway?

Fourth, fire all the members of the legislatures and their staffs from across the country. They just waste time arguing among themselves anyway.

Fifth, now use the loyal military to install a benevolent great leader for life to make all those pesky decisions. Canadians, now freed from the shackles of messy democracy can now enjoy reduced taxes and the dividends of much less overhead.

With some of the saved money Canada can bolster its military to easily comply with NATO commitments to keep the soon-to-be American authoritarian regime happy with us.

Freedom from any government overreach and freedom from onerous taxation will be our Canadian prize.

In case you missed it, sarcasm with a dollop of watch-what-you-wish-for.
