Dear editor, I am trying my best to ignore politics in Alberta right now because, quite frankly, it is no good for my mental health. It doesn’t make any sense and the politicians are ignoring the professionals who know what they are talking about. Apparently politicians think pharmacists can be as good as family doctors and can prescribe medication. That will be good for a short-term illness but what if a short-term illness is masking an underlying problem that a family physician could catch? A nurse practitioner is great – and haven’t we been asking for them for at least a decade – but why are they going to be in private clinics and not public health care? What about people like myself who have always had complex needs? We need to be followed by family doctors, and our population is getting older and seniors have more needs as we get older. Every day it seems like our government comes out with a new controversy to distract us like the last one just to keep us unbalanced. It just makes me wonder what legislation they are really working on in Edmonton. Dianne MacNaughton Redcliff 10
