Letter: Pharmacists are essential members of the team

Dear editor,

I am saddened by recent developments in our health-care community.

I have come to understand that a number of general practitioners within this province and no doubt our city are opposed to pharmacists having the authority to prescribe what amounts to a very limited number of medications.

Pharmacists are essential members of our health-care team… emphasis on team. Their area of expertise is invaluable and the ability to prescribe for certain conditions is well within their purview.

General practitioners should be thankful for their assistance in reducing an ever-increasing workload and for providing patients with timely advice and care.

I sense this unfortunate negativity directed at pharmacists stems from a place of covetousness. This is putting a stop to a number of unnecessary ‘easy appointments’ for refills and common colds and reducing their bottom line.
