Dear Editor, The recently publicized USA decision regarding the right to carry a gun for protection reminds me of just how different Canadians are. Of course Canadians also own guns, but far fewer than in the U.S., and it is typically for recreational purposes. I just returned from a short U.S. visit to Seattle, (via train out of Havre, return – a great inexpensive trip) and met and visited with several American tourists. Gun ownership never even entered my mind while on the train. Many TV viewers, including me, watch entertaining but sometimes violent U.S. television programs. Hopefully those that involve guns, don’t wrongfully influence some viewers, who should never have access to guns. It appears that gun ownership for protection will remain a part of the U.S. culture. However, I acknowledge we are very fortunate to have the U.S. as neighbours and friends. I also recognize that U.S. gun policy is really none of our business, and don’t view such ownership as a threat to Canadian tourists. Of course, access to guns, by the wrong people, is always a concern, anywhere in the world. Gordon Briosi Medicine Hat 10
