Dear editor, You know the past 50 years have rolled past very quickly! I would at this time like to wish BATUS a very happy 50th birthday. Hopefully we can celebrate many more in the years to come. As an original member of the first 15 British soldiers to start up BATUS, we landed in Montreal on January 8, 1972 via Brize Norton (UK) and Washington D.C., on to Calgary and finally Suffield. We were not used to the very cold windy weather and lots of snow, also Suffield was very isolated, believe me it was a great shock to the system as none of us knew what to expect. Well, 50 years later here I am living in Medicine Hat and still loving it! As an old friend Wilf Ottenbriet once said, “This is a Plum Posting.” How right you were my friend, RIP. Thanks to Medicine Hat for accepting all us ex-Brits who decided to stay in your beautiful city. Unfortunately after 50 years only a handful of the original 15 are still living, but I am sure all those who had the pleasure of serving at BATUS over the past 50 years will join me once again in wishing you a very happy birthday. Thanks and take care all. Neville A. Palmer Medicine Hat 9
