Dear editor, Opposition Leader Erin O’Toole is the latest public figure to be chastised for talking sense about residential schools. No one denies or justifies the abuse which occurred but that is not the whole story. I don’t know how the people who perpetrated the brutality became part of the system, because they were unsuitable and never should have been involved. There were also good-hearted people who did their best to have good influence, yet their efforts are negated by today’s know-it-alls. Any former student who, despite the negativity, managed to achieve an education, and make friends while doing so, cannot claim to have received no benefit at all from these schools. I’m sure the founders would be gratified by the successes, though they are now demonized for what are assumed to be their ulterior motives. It takes a narrow mind to presume it can judge other people’s intentions. Once an issue has succumbed to the one-sidedness of political correctness, the whole truth is not welcome in public discourse. Charmaine Wood Irvine 10
