Pay attention to the source of the food

By Letter to the Editor on May 22, 2019.

When shopping recently I found eight kinds of frozen fish in a major grocery store. All but one of these choices were products of China or Vietnam. Naturally, I bought the one which came to us from northern Saskatchewan.

Look at the labels in most food stores. It would seem Canada can’t feed itself without foreign aid. I think, especially in view of the recent trade difficulties, we should stop buying food from China.

Maybe we should try to wean ourselves off Chinese imports in general – if only that were possible! For some time now I have been checking the sources of items before making purchases.

This is great advice Charmaine.
I’ve travelled through China (2005) and saw creeks so polluted the water was orange, literally orange, and it was flowing into cultivated fields.
Vietnam is not too far behind (been there too, same trip).
The big problem is Canadian grocery giants such as Loblaws continue to import produce, such as garlic, from China because it’s cheap.
Quality doesn’t measure up against their bottom line.
It’s up to the consumer to be aware.
