It’s an exciting time for automation. Suncor is set to be an industry leader by rolling out “autonomous heavy haul trucks” on their oilsands sites. Soon enough companies will be able to dispense with most of their staff, aside from the odd maintenance position, their vehicles and worksites being self-equipped to follow a series of pre-established routines. GM is going to be a Canadian leader as well. They’re going to convert a large portion of their physical holdings into an area that will allow for the performing of autonomous vehicle testing in Oshawa. You don’t need lots of workers – just hire highly-educated individuals to do the brainy stuff, focus on remaining cost-effective and turn that profit. So how can Medicine Hat get become a Canadian leader in automation? We could retrofit public transit, police cruisers and fire trucks with computers, turning them into self-driving vehicles that navigate the streets as needed. We could invest in machines that deliver fully-prepared meals and administer medication to residents in retirement homes. Michael Plait Medicine Hat 6
