Once again I feel the need to play foil to opinion writers who use the newspaper to attempt to influence readers without having the proper qualifications in the field they are attempting to exploit. Google does not offer science degrees. Opinions help us explore ideas but still need proven facts when making statements that suggest the need for them. One can certainly believe that mankind has only existed for 5,000 years, but please do not present it as fact. In the same sentence is stated “and we ‘may’ be among the smartest species to live here” … suggesting what?Care to explore what is meant by that statement? Perhaps alien life forms? The Bible would not support that idea. Don’t leave me hanging. I really want to know what is meant here. Carbon dioxide is not pollution? Try breathing in a plastic bag for a few minutes. Actually don’t. The result is life changing. Creating a stable, liveable future planet may or may not be achievable. But individually there are things we can do. If the science is on my side then planting trees, bicycling or walking when possible, turning the thermostat down are some of the simpler things we can all do. A person’s carbon dioxide output is more than “that each one breathes out a lung full of carbon dioxide every five seconds.” Because China is not taking steps to address the problem which was stated, which I am not sure is true, is not a reason to not do our part. Lastly, a good writer would not use bias, political or otherwise, to support their claims. It is petty and foolish to demonize liberal thinkers and writers, not because of their knowledge, but because they live opposite one’s political leaning. Making plans for a changing planet is one takeaway that I think we can all agree with and support, but is it the only solution? I feel we cannot dismiss the concerns and ideas of the next generation (re: AOC and others). I would certainly hope that each generation is smarter and more strategic than the last or truly mankind may be doomed. Ken Arnott Medicine Hat 9
I agree 100% with you Ken, unfortunately the Conservatives will more then likely get in power, which will set back any progress a liberal or NDP government ever would. Here in sleepy Medicine Hat, we have about 90% conservatives. This means we are in deep trouble concerning any type of positive action towards climate change.
Look at the major outcry of Hatters (Haters is more like it) when the city said a public safe consumption site was in the works. Oh no, Alberta will soon have that cheating little Kenny dude in control. He will set back any strides the NDP has made by 20 years.
And since there is no god, we can’t even say “God help us”
