I was at the community meeting on the safe injection site this past Wednesday. As we have heard, one of the hot button issues has been about community consultation. HIV Community Link is saying they sent 6,000 postcards out to the community asking for input. The crowd at the meeting was asked how many people got them. I was one of a handful of people that put up my hand. The reason I remember getting the postcard last summer along with all my other junk mail was because addictions is something my family has experienced and it hit my radar before it hit my recycle bin. And I went to one of those meetings last summer because I wanted to learn more about their ideas and I had the chance to tell them mine. Apparently I also received notices about the City of Medicine Hat’s community consultation on cannabis retail locations. But that didn’t hit my radar before it hit my recycle bin. And I didn’t participate. I guess that was my choice. Medicine Hat has more retail cannabis stores per capita than anywhere else in Alberta. So, why is HIV Community Link taking heat for lack of community consultation and the City of Medicine Hat is not? Bob Westgarth
