Recycling at Medicine Hat Mall is not all it seems. The new waste sorting system at the mall confuses many. It is a learning process first of all; but secondly it is also pointless. Not that this writer finds recycling pointless. Au contraire, this writer knows the mall does not recycle anything but the bottles, cans, and cartons it redeems for cash. The new food court has had stations resembling recycling sorting stations since it opened in August 2017. The stations have four holes for waste, labeled paper, plastic, waste, and bottles/cans. Management has not yet successfully implemented any sort of additional recycling beyond the bottles/cans/carton recycling it maintained in the old food court. All waste besides bottles/cans/ cartons gets thrown in the same compactor out back. Janitorial staff are asked to sort the customers’ food court garbage into separate bins although they know it all goes to the same place. This contributes to the misconception that Primaris management is doing more recycling than in the old food court. If you have questions, concerns, or complaints about this process, please leave them with Medicine Hat Mall customer service. Marnie Gatfield Medicine Hat 8
