Don’t worry about what others think

By Letter to the Editor on October 4, 2018.

It is Mental Illness Awareness Week Sept. 30 to Oct. 7 when we need to think about everyone who has a mental illness or knows someone who does. I suppose that is all of us.

I have been living with a mental illness for 22 years now and have been stable or in recovery for about 20 years. I was very lucky in finding meds that worked and support groups that helped. Also learning not to worry about what other people thought is the most helpful. Stigma can be the most damaging. So as long as we realize that it is alright to have a mental illness just like it is acceptable to be physically ill then we will be able to be in recovery sooner and for longer periods.
