Letter: We are all Canadians

By Letter to the Editor on January 15, 2026.

Dear editor,

“Canada is a Country of Immigrants,” that is what my father always said to me.

Canada is rich because of it. My family on my father’s side were refugees from the United States of America and came in 1778. They were United Empire Loyalists.

They fought against the Americans in the Loyalist War and the 1812 War. My grandfather on my mother’s side helped a lot of Eastern Europeans come over after the Second World War.

Immigrants work hard and are good for our economy. If you are not Indigenous somewhere in your background you have a relative who was an immigrant.

We should welcome immigrants into our neighbourhoods, into our cities because they are fleeing terrible conditions. These people want better things for themselves and their families. Our ancestors wanted those things, too, and that is why we live in this beautiful country of ours.

I know we have a housing crisis, but there are still jobs people can do that some Canadians do not want to do. I know the universities still need foreign students to pay higher tuition to keep those institutions going. We cannot judge people just because they have been in Canada for a shorter time than we have. We are all Canadians.
