Letter: Webster Niblock Elementary School had long-lasting positive effect on so many people

By Letter to the Editor on November 11, 2025.

Dear editor,

I am writing to you today as a former and proud student of Webster Niblock Elementary School. Webster Niblock was vitally important in shaping the person I am today and providing the foundational education that prepared me for my life’s work.

I have just celebrated my 25th year of teaching, a career path directly inspired by the exceptional educators I encountered within those walls.

WNES was truly a neighbourhood school for me. I have fond memories of walking to and from school every day, including heading home for lunch. This connection to the community and the feeling of belonging enriched the entire school experience.

Academic excellence was paired with outstanding extracurricular programs. I distinctly remember the drama plays we performed in Grade 6. Those experiences helped instill confidence and creativity that have enriched my life ever since.

The love of teaching I witnessed at WNES was palpable and served as my initial inspiration.

I want to specifically acknowledge the dedicated staff who made such a lasting impact: my teachers Gloria Schirok, Sharon Clay, Judy Chalmers, Christina Koenig, Terry Freeman, Cal Hauserman, Dayle Klaudt, Keith Ashton and Andrea Ashton; the leadership of my principals, Mr. James Hirsch and Dr. Glen Giduk; Mrs. Marguerite Seitz, who kept our library immaculate; Mrs. Bonnie Blakely, our office administrator who welcomed us every day; and our beloved custodian, Mr. Charles (Charlie) McKinnon, who kept the school running smoothly and ensured WNES was a clean, safe, and positive space for us all.

They collectively fostered an engaging and positive environment that truly made WNES an amazing place to be.

I understand difficult decisions regarding school infrastructure must be made, and that school closures sometimes occur. I sincerely hope that a way can be found for Webster Niblock to remain open and continue serving the community as it did for me.

However, if the unfortunate decision to close the school is made, I strongly urge the school board to ensure WNES receives the celebration it deserves. I hope all past and present staff, students and families can have one last get-together. This could be a meaningful event to show our profound appreciation for the role this school played in so many lives over the years.

Sincerely,

R. Bailey
