Dear editor, In response to a recent letter to the editor that appeared in the News on Aug. 21, written by Ben Moffat. First the heading of the letter described the UCP as undermining Canadian institutions; I am not aware of any “Canadian institutions” that weren’t already decimated or undermined by 10 years of Liberal government; our former and current PM have done a masterful job of that while ensuring they remain on that same dubious pathway. A study by the Fraser Institute suggests median-income workers could see a 71.6% increase in their total retirement income under an Alberta Pension Plan when compared to the current CPP structure. Further, any potential APP could result in significantly lower individual contribution rates closer to 5.5% rather than the current 9.9% individuals contribute now. An APP would open the door to investment strategies tailored to fit the Alberta economy, with the potential of creating much higher returns on investment. As for impacts to seniors already collecting CPP, a projected savings of $5.5 billion from current CPP payments could be used to further enhance Alberta senior benefits and incomes. The creation of a provincial police force known as the Alberta Sheriffs Police Service would serve all Albertan’s. The ASPS would address the unique needs of both urban and rural communities while also supporting our municipalities. Ontario (Ontario Provincial Police) and Quebec (SĂ»retĂ© du QuĂ©bec) are provincial police services that do not rely on RCMP capacity, The ASPS would be similarly positioned. The author fails to mention (or perhaps is unaware) of the “Electoral Boundaries Commission,” whose job it is to conduct public consultations and compile boundary and population-based information. Findings are presented to the Legislative Assembly for consideration. Neither the UCP nor NDP unilaterally make changes to the boundaries or population figures. As for referendum to join the U.S., the issue at hand as stated by the premier is Alberta “sovereignty” and not becoming the 51st state. Unfortunately, Mr. Moffat’s letter is misleading and does not portray the intent of the UCP nor Danielle Smith. Ken Pirie Medicine Hat 14
I wonder who Ken Pirie thinks he is fooling it certainly isnât any of the true conservatives in my world. Believing the lies these Reformers have fed him doesnât make him look very smart, does it?
Showing no respect for our children and grandchildrenâs future by ignoring the massive debt these Reformers have created for them to deal with is disgusting. Can he explain where they are going to find the soon to be $500 billion oil well cleanup mess, and the continually growing $88 billion debt along with the ever increasing $20 billion deficit to repair roads, bridges and build 60 new schools that are desperately needed because we canât see anything intelligent about the future they must face. As Peter Lougheed said we are in a âHorrific Financial Messâ, and itâs a lot worse than when he said it.
Add in the stupidity of âAxe the Tax â and do nothing about what global warming is doing to the planet when 46 countries are desperately trying to help their children do something about it doesnât make these Reformers look very smart, does it?
Lawyers warn that if Smith gets control of our Canada Pension Plan there would nothing stopping her from canceling plans for any seniors who have obtained more than they have already paid into it and with most seniors receiving 8 times more than they paid in we arenât dumb enough to let that happen, so why would Pirie?
