Dear editor, I feel Canada Post is an important Canadian Institution that should be preserved no matter what the cost, much like the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. It is what brings Canada together and what is uniquely Canadian. It is important to both rural and urban Canada. I admit I am biased. My grandfather was postmaster in Waterloo, Ont. for many years, and my uncle after him. I grew up with the stories my grandfather told me. The one thing that always stuck with me though was that for the cost of a stamp a letter could be sent across this great country of ours. “Just think of that, Diane,” he would say. And I did. That is the great thing about Canada Post. For the cost of a stamp, we can send a letter, a parcel for a nominal fee to anyone in our great country. That is the vision! I know that we need to treat our workers fairly, I know that things have to change. We need to keep the rural routes. Not everyone can afford to send by delivery services. Not everyone has the internet or internet that works all the time. I do not send a letter very often myself. It is easier to send an email. But the odd time I do and I am glad the post office is still there to send a letter or a card to someone far away just for the cost of a stamp. It is an amazing service and I hope we can find a way to keep it that way. Dianne MacNaughton Redcliff 14
