Letter: Separation would be especially hard on Alberta’s disabled

By Letter to the Editor on June 24, 2025.

Dear editor,

We are a group of advocates with disabilities. We are worried about Alberta separating from Canada.

If Alberta separates, we will lose important federal programs such as CPP-Disability, Canada Disability Benefit, our Registered Disability Savings Plan contributions, native affairs payments and federal education grants for students with disabilities.

Health-care programs will not have to follow federal rules tied to transfer payments for public health care, education and social programs.

If Alberta must spend money to set up police services, immigration and citizenship systems, currency and an Alberta pension plan, there is less money for social programs like AISH/Income Supports, disability services, aids to daily living, housing, addictions, mental health and health care for everyone.

Interprovincial health-care agreements would need renegotiation. People could lose access to specialized medical care and unique programs in other Canadian provinces.

Will those of us born in other provinces have to move back to them?”
