Six months after a self-styled “Queen of Canada” and supporters set up residence in a former school in Richmound, Sask., national broadcast news program W5 has produced an in-depth report on issues in the community northeast of Medicine Hat.

Cubs eliminated from HJHL playoffs

The Medicine Hat Cubs 50th season came to a close with a 4-2 loss Sunday in Game 4 of their third round series against the Sylvan lake Wranglers. The Cubs avoided a sweep with a 4-3 win Saturday at the Kinplex.

Housing cash

A week after it was learned that Medicine Hat was denied federal funds related to a “Housing Accelerator” grant, reports arrive that the City of Lethbridge was also denied a $6.25 million request.

Officials in Medicine Hat had planned to use the money to examine internal processes, lower development costs and study the issue.

Readers can expect a further report into Medicine Hat’s planning to alleviate housing problems this week.

Sun city

Double digit temperatures and lows near just-freezing are expected in Medicine Hat and the southeast of Alberta for the remainder of the week.

Irrigation

The Brooks Bulletin is reporting that the $237-million Snake Lake reservoir expansion, near Bassano, was approved at the annual general meeting of the Eastern Irrigation District last week.

This week will also bring the expected mid-month report from the St. Mary’s Irrigation District about reservoir levels heading toward an expected dry summer.

The SMRID will hold its AGM and announce an initial water allocation for the season in early April.

Tigers drop both weekend games

The Medicine Hat Tigers lost both of their games on the road over the weekend, hitting a three-game slide.

They lost 3-1 to the Saskatoon Blades on Friday and were thumped 8-3 Saturday by the Prince Albert Raiders. Friday’s game story can be found here and Saturday’s can be read here.

The Tigers (35-22-5-2) are off until Friday when they head to Swift Current for the first of a home-and-home series with the Broncos.
