Just Pondering: Thank you.

By Allyson McCaw on October 26, 2023.

As many of you know I have worked in health care for many years, and I currently work in the cancer care world.

Now, many have asked me over the years “How do you do it? It must be so terrible.” And my response always surprises them. Because you see, this job has truly been the best I have ever held. I have had the extremely fortunate opportunity to brush shoulders with the most courageous and real-life heroes ever. This includes the patient and those who love them.

You see, people battling cancer are a special breed. They continually teach me how to never take anything for granted in this life, how to stay positive even when everything seems impossible and that life is a journey we all travel.

Seems a bit cliché, I know, but the people I have met on their cancer journey have given me so much.

Thank you for sharing your tears, sometimes your anger and always your courage. I have been part of wonderful stories of cancer survival and total relief and joy when the words “you are cancer free “are spoken.

But also, I’ve been part of that journey when we must say goodbye. Both experiences have taught me how to be appreciative, humble and always grateful for all I have been blessed with.

To hold a hand, to wipe a tear and just maybe say the right words when needed is the gift you give to me. So, to all of you who are on a cancer journey or maybe travelled with a loved one on that path, Thank you.

Stay well.

Allyson
