Letter: United Conservatives are just not qualified to hold government in this province

By Letter to the Editor on June 30, 2022.

Dear editor,

There are many reasons to not vote for the UCP in May 2023. Think mishandling of COVID mandates, picking fights with doctors, nurses, teachers, underfunding university and colleges and financially manipulating faculty offerings, increasing tuition fees, insurance premiums, camping fees, park entry fees, doling out billions to corporations and phantom pipelines, and funding a $30-million “War Room,” whose only success has been finding a Big Foot cartoon character who didn’t like oil. This is just a small sampling of failures of this government.

But now we see several additional inducements to say Auf Wiedersehen to this Company of Clowns.

Michelle Rempel Garner, a highly respected and tough Conservative MP, thinking about taking a run at the premier’s job, has looked inside the hornet’s nest, (aka, ‘the UCP caucus’), and come to the sage observation that the party is “… rife with anger, intrigue and implacable division,” and there is no easy way to fix this party. She turned and ran away. (The News, June 24, 2022)

Another close observer notes, “This is now the established political culture of the UCP: dishonest, rudderless and toxic.” (Drew Barnes, the News, Nov.19, 2021). For once Mr. Barnes has said something even I can agree with.

But wait! There’s more! If you think 2022 was a tough year for the UCP, then, if you can imagine, things could be even worse, and by that I mean Danielle Smith.

Ms. Smith, reading the tea leaves of Alberta’s version of ‘The Tea Party’ (yes, the same oddballs who invaded Ottawa with their ‘Freedom Trucks’), wants to lead the UCP into becoming a bastion of freedom against the evil encroachment of Ottawa.

She’ll bring in an Alberta Sovereignty act which will reject all federal acts that ‘interfere’ with Alberta’s perceived interests. This will include a Provincial Police Force and a separate tax collection agency. Does Ms. Smith know anything about the glacial pace of even minor constitutional change in Canada? How many lifetimes does she think she has?

Alberta, my home for most of my life, deserves a government that cares about the wellbeing and prosperity of all citizens, the proper management of its resources and its environment, a long-range view of its future and a government run by adults who respect our participation in the best country in the world.

The UCP is clearly not qualified for the job.

So Mueller compliments two Conservatives he despises, just so that he can use their words to back up he childish arguments. Let’s just say this, the only worse MLA than Mueller for this area would be someone foolish enough to have a close association with him. Socialist grifters.
