Letter: Watering down our votes

By Letter to the Editor on September 17, 2021.

Dear editor,

It is wonderful to see so many candidates willing to put themselves under public scrutiny in order to serve on our city council and make our city better. My concern is with how we vote. People may think it is mandatory to use all eight of our votes for councillors. This is not the case.

In fact, if you do not have eight strong preferred candidates, using all eight votes will actually dilute your votes and reduce their impact.

For example, suppose you really like Happy and Doc, so you vote for them. But, there you are at the voting booth with six more votes to “spend”. Suppose you fairly randomly vote for Sleepy, Grumpy, Bashful, Dopey, Sneezy and of course, Snow, since all their names seem familiar. Well, you have effectively just voted against Happy and Doc six times!

Please, spend your votes carefully and effectively on Oct.18.
