Letter: More courage needed to fight climate change

By Letter to the Editor on July 14, 2021.

Dear editor,

Clearly there has been discouragingly insufficient political courage and will to properly act upon the cause-and-effect of manmade global warming and climate change.

‘Liberals’ and ‘conservatives’ (etcetera) are overly preoccupied with vociferously criticizing one another for their politics and beliefs, thus diverting attention away from the greatest polluters’ moral and ethical corruption, where it should and needs to be sharply focused.

To me, general human existence has for too long been analogous to a cafeteria lineup consisting of diversely societally represented people, all adamantly arguing over which identifiable person should be at the front and, conversely, at the back of the line. Many of them further fight over whom amongst them should get the last piece of quality pie and how much they should have to pay for it – all the while the interstellar spaceship on which they’re all permanently confined, owned and operated by (besides the wealthiest passengers) the fossil fuel industry, is on fire and toxifying at locations not normally investigated.

But I still see some hope for spaceship Earth and therefore humankind due to environmentally conscious and active children, especially those who are approaching/reaching voting age. In contrast, the dinosaur electorate who have been voting into high office consecutive mass-pollution promoting or complicit/complacent governments for decades are gradually dying off, thus making way for a far more healthy-planet-thus-people minded voters.

Well said Frank. It was Peter Lougheed who urged the Klein and Stelmach governments to slow down the growth of the oil sands, collect proper royalties , get control of our pollution and refine our oil in Canada creating jobs for Canadians instead of ones for Americans and the Chinese

They refused to listen and instead slashed taxes and royalties and urged the world to come and get our next to free oil, but weren’t smart enough to make certain there was a proper system in place to get the massive increase in production to foreign markets, resulting in the mess we are in

It’s no secret that they have literally given away hundreds of billions of dollars in royalties and tax breaks to their rich friends leaving Albertans in a “Horrific Mess” as Lougheed called it. In other words they have helped their rich friends screw us out of our wealth and they don’t care.
