Dear editor, People from all around the world come to Alberta to enjoy the Rocky Mountains. But we also enjoy the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, because that’s where we get our drinking water. The province is quietly proceeding with new coal mining developments in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, which will result in the contamination of our drinking water. The proposed strip-mining developments will not only contaminate our drinking water, but it will also destroy the habitat of several endangered species and the natural beauty that we enjoy for hiking and camping. The province, as a result of pushback from the public, has decided to do some minor “public consultation.” However it is evident that they have already determined the outcome of this so-called consultation. Please write a letter or send an email to the premier, your MLA, your city council, asking them to demand a stop to the development of new coal mines in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
