One particular scene of ‘Unplanned’ impactful

By Letter to the Editor on October 16, 2019.

Re: “Regrettably, ‘Unplanned’ can’t be unseen,” Sept. 30

I too, attended the showing of the movie, “Unplanned” at the Monarch Theatre. While the writer of the aforementioned letter dwells to a large degree on, in her words, “obscene gore,” that is not at all what made an impression on me. What did affect me, however, was the scene in the film where the fetus struggles, in vain, to find a safe corner in its mother’s womb, trying to escape the doctor’s probing instrument which ultimately brings it to its demise. And while some may have the view that at this time, the fetus is not yet a baby, isn’t it true that this is the point at which we all began. Amazing, how even at this early stage of life, a human strives for self preservation.

I so tire of the overused term, “women’s health care” in relation to abortion, as though pregnancy is an illness or disease. And while there are extenuating circumstances for a small percentage of women, for the majority, it will be a quick fix to an inconvenient situation. Ultimately, it will have to be hearts that are softened rather than trying to forcefully change minds.

So much focus these days in society has been placed on saving our environment and the planet. We would do well to place the same value and emphasis on saving the unborn children of our world too.

I say, regrettably, “Unplanned” will not be seen in every city, in every province in our country. My thanks to those individuals who took the initiative to make it available for viewing in our city.
