UCP absence from debates a cynical tactic

By Letter to the Editor on April 6, 2019.

The repeated failure of UCP candidates to take part in provincial election debates is worrying.

What is their rationale for this? It’s hard to think of a good one. Their absence appears to be a cynical tactic, one that is contemptuous of the voters of Alberta and our democratic processes. We have a right to hear from all candidates and to exchange views with them on their proposed policies.

If the UCP does not want to account to voters now, as they are seeking our votes, it\’s hard to imagine that they’ll be accessible to Albertans and listen to our views if they are elected.

It’s obvious that they don’t want to face questions about their plans to privatize health care and our education system, or explain why they are planning to privatize the Treasury Branches. The only thing they have is they are going to scrape the carbon tax, they don’t give a damn about global warming and the lawsuits our children will face if we don’t make an effort to do something about it, like the oilmen are stating.

Keep the people stupid until we get elected then spring all these destructive policies upon them, and there are still ignorant seniors willing to support them..
