Forgotten that some people still insist that the Old Testament author is God

By Letter to the Editor on August 17, 2018.

As democracy is perfected, the office of the president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. “On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and The White House will be occupied by a downright fool and complete narcissisist moron” wrote H.L. Mencken, The Baltimore Evening Sun, July 26, 1920.

Surely John Stanley is having us all on with his defence of that intentionally ignorant Donald Trump. I say ‘intentionally’ because I cannot even imagine a clever businessman being that disruptive, untruthful, foolish, unwise, etc. unless he/she knows the constituency he/she must win over to achieve electoral success.

The Hebrews of old, authors of most of the Old Testament, were and still are, an intelligent, creative and clever people. According to the Book of Genesis, if I remember correctly, God destroyed ‘peoplekind’s’ effort to build the Tower of Babel and, after humankind having spoken the same tongue since forever, invented/developed all kinds of different languages, customs and cultures, to teach folks not to even think of trying to be gods. Myself, I would wish that hadn’t happened — and didn’t happen because the Hebrew God willed it — because that, in my humble and uneducated opinion, together with all the different religions, has been one of the prime causes of all kinds of conflicts, wars, genocides, atrocities, imperialisms, subjugation of people, the lack of some kind of world government, and attitudes expressed in the old imperialist ‘blacks being the burden of the white man’.

As a matter of fact, I had forgotten, with all due respect, that there are still people who believed and had the attitudes of a John Stanley, who still insist that The Old Testament’s author is God, speaking through His prophets, instead of a beautifully written creation/collection of Hebrew legends and stories and beliefs.
