It’s unfortunate the palliative care unit has shut down at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and that there are layoffs. The sad reality seems to be that there are those who are older and uncomfortable with the idea of hospitals and nursing homes. Yet the hospitals are there for those who are ill. In the case of my mother, who passed away last August, she had feared going into a hospital or nursing home. This was a product of her dementia. She passed in her own home. The truth is hospitals are there to care for the patient in the best way possible. Without palliative care, where will people go? Derrick Colleaux Medicine Hat 6
