The McCoy Colts girls and boys basketball team both came up just short of a 3A zone championship on Saturday at McCoy High School, but the girls still managed to punch their ticket to provincials.

Despite falling 71-63 to the WR Myers Rebels in the Alberta Schools Athletics Association South Zone Championship final, McCoy’s girls basketball squad had already secured their berth with a semifinal victory —but the boys were forced to call it a season after a 65-61 loss to the Rebels later Saturday evening.

“We played really hard we just didn’t shoot the ball as well as we did last time,” said Grade 12 Colts forward Spencer Tudor, adding the team’s younger players finished the game strong.

“It was just focus, the timeouts really helped and we put our bench in and they really came in and played strong.”

Deacon Hynes led the Colts with 16 points in the loss and Tudor added 13.

Brett Andrus led the Rebels with 22 points.

Hannah Stark led McCoy’s girls team with 15 points in the final, while WR Myers’ Kitawna Sparks posted 31 to lead the Rebels to victory.

McCoy’s girls basketball team will open the ASAA 3A provincial championship in Cochrane on Thursday.
