DOREEN GRENDAHL

1926 ~ 2016
Doreen Grendahl, beloved wife of Harvey Grendahl, fell asleep in death, Thursday, August 25, 2016, at the age of 89 years. The Scripture in Proverbs 31:10,11 asks, “Who can find a capable wife?” Harvey found and married that girl on June 27, 1947, she truly was more value than corals as the scripture goes on to say. Doreen is survived by her loving husband, Harvey and son, Ken. Her grandchildren, Liam and Brenna, as well as her sister, Betty. Doreen loved to tell people about the promise of Jehovah’s Kingdom where pain and death will be no more. We look forward to seeing her then with her health and vitality restored. A Memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses and will be formally announced at a later date. DOUGLAS MILLER

December 13, 1948 ~ August 22, 2016

Sadly, the Miller family announce the sudden passing of Douglas Miller on Monday, August 22, 2016, at the age of 67 years. Along with his loving wife, Judy, Doug’s memory will forever remain in the hearts of his daughter, Krista (Mark) Davies; two grandchildren, Zachary and Cameron Miller and their mother, Stephanie (Tyrel) Smith and their son, Dawson. He is also survived by his sister, Sharon (Richard) Ehry and their children, Jason, Chris and Raegan and their families as well as his mother-in-law, Joan Dolman, all of Medicine Hat. Doug also leaves behind many more relatives and very good friends. He was predeceased by his son, Sheldon (2009); parents, Mark (1989) and Tina (2007) as well as his father-in-law, Beevor Dolman (1995). Doug, A.K.A. “Tiger”, was well known in the community for his years of playing fastball with many record breaking achievements. He has since passed on his great love and knowledge of all sports to his children and grandchildren. With some of the highest marks in the Province, Doug breezed through his schooling on his way to achieving his journeyman’s certification as a Pipefitter. He worked at Western Co-op Fertilizer and Goodyear, finishing his career in January of 2008. Doug was a whiz with numbers and math, always teaching his kids and grandkids tricks with numbers, encouraging them to use their heads instead of their calculators. He loved sharing his knowledge with others and teaching about the use of “common sense” (CS). Doug and Judy were married in 1972 and enjoyed everything that life offered, especially children, camping, sports, travelling, family get togethers and the company of good friends. Doug was an advocate of being a good neighbour. In his tight knit community, he was always checking on houses, cutting grass, shovelling snow and looking after pets while his friends and neighbours were away. He loved to be in his garage, “The Doug & Dog House”, with the TV on sports and the company of his two “girls”, Keebler and Rachel Ray. If any of the neighbours wanted a chat, they knew they’d find him there. In honouring Doug’s wishes, a simple Graveside Service will be held at Hillside Cemetery in Medicine Hat on Monday, August 29, 2016, at 3:00 p.m. with Reverend David Pollard officiating. Those attending are encouraged to gather at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Monday between 2:20 p.m. and 2:40 p.m. The procession will depart for Hillside Cemetery at 2:45 p.m. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to please dress casual. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at http://www.cooksouthland.com) If friends so desire, donations in memory of Doug may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 124, 430 – 6 Avenue S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 2S8. HENDERSON

Dr. Larry L. Henderson, beloved husband of Vera Lenore Henderson, passed away at the age of 86 years on Wednesday, August 24th 2016 at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.
He will be remembered, with love, by his son, Dr. Scott Henderson (Nadine Yeo), daughter Kim (Harvey) Bernbaum, and the apples of his eye, granddaughters Piper and Talia Bernbaum (Fiance Robert Birrell). He will also be deeply missed by his brothers Dub (Gwen), Al (Donna), Bob (Patty Johnson), Jerry (Theresa) and sister-in-law Vi Henderson, as well as honorary brother Dr. Ken (Valerie) Sauer. He also leaves behind a legion of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews whom he loved and thought were very, very special. He was always available to talk and lend advice about life, love and their personal pursuits.
Larry was predeceased by his grandson Matthew Henderson and daughter-in-law Patricia Henderson, as well as his sister Margaret and her husband Lyle Smith, brothers Ron and Ed, sister Vernette and her husband Les Allison and sister-in-law Lynne Henderson.
His chosen career was as an educator, ultimately achieving his Doctor of Education in 1985. Larry taught and administrated in schools in Saskatchewan and Alberta, spending the body of his career in Medicine Hat. In 1976, he was appointed the Principal of Southview Community School. With the assistance of his willing and supportive staff, Larry championed and executed the new community school concept at Southview and then later assisted in integrating the concept into schools in other districts.
Upon his retirement in 1993, Larry accepted a volunteer position to raise capital for enrichment activities that were not being funded by the Department of Education. This seemingly short-term task led to a very successful twenty-one year term as one of the directors of the Medicine Hat Public Schools’ Education Foundation. He also served on the Board of Directors for St. John Ambulance, was a long time volunteer for the many summer and winter games held here, and was a member of Toastmasters, the Medicine Hat Lions Club, and the Medicine Hat and District Retired Teachers Association.
Larry’s list of accomplishments and honours were many, but the highlights were the 2005 Alberta Centennial Medal, the 2009 Civic Recognition Award for Community Service, the 2012 Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal, and the 2015 Medicine Hat College Honorary Applied Baccalaureate Degree. He was so pleased to be recognized by a city and community that he loved and championed to everyone and anyone he met. Despite his life’s rich body of work Larry left us all too soon. He will be deeply missed.
A celebration of Larry’s life will be held at Westminster United Church (101 6th St SE) on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Chelsea Masterman officiating. As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to the Medicine Hat Public Schools’ Education Foundation (601 1st Ave SW, Medicine Hat, T1A 4Y7).
