With heavy hearts the family of Shirley Delores Patton announces her peaceful passing at home on Tuesday, November 18th, 2014 at the age of 87 years. Left to carry on her legacy of nurturing and kindness are her children: Doug, Dave (Michele), and Beth (Martin) Collier; her grandchildren, Orrin Patton, Katelyn Patton, Jay Patton, Kayla (Stuart) Young, Bryce Collier and Kendal Collier. She is survived by sisters-in-law, Christina Hulbert and Nancy Hulbert; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Jim MacKinnon; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her parents; son, Robert; infant daughter, Nancy; her husband, Charlie (2005); and all three of her siblings. Shirley was born to Havelock and Gertrude Hulbert in Coleman, Alberta on August 6th, 1927, sister to Iowna, Vans (Bud) and Vince. Shirley often reminisced about the challenging but cherished times growing up in the Crowsnest Pass. After graduating from high school in 1946, Shirley boarded the train for Medicine Hat to pursue a career in nursing. Little did she know how significant a role the railroad would play in her life. While in training, Shirley met Charlie Patton, a young brakeman for CP Rail. They were married Christmas Eve of 1949. Shirley graduated from the Medicine Hat General Hospital Nursing Class in June of 1950 as a Registered Nurse. Shirley continued friendships with her fellow Nursing Alumni until the end of her life. Shirley successfully juggled her career, being a railroader’s wife, and raising her children until her retirement in 1981. Despite being quiet spoken, Shirley embraced life, enjoyed knitting and crossword puzzles, reading, playing darts, curling and, most of all, golfing. She and Charlie were supportive and active members of the Elkwater Golf Club near the cabin that they built together and enjoyed throughout their lifetime. Both were active members at the MHGCC where Shirley was heavily involved in Ladies’ Golf League. Together, Shirley and Charlie spent many hours on the golf course in California where they wintered for many years. Shirley was an active member of St. John’s Presbyterian Church. Shirley’s greatest love of all was for her family. She loved her children unconditionally and avidly followed her grandchildren’s pursuits, delighting in their many accomplishments. Her love and devotion will be forever cherished. Shirley will be truly missed by all who knew her. We would like to gratefully acknowledge the tender, loving care Mom/Grandma received from the staff at Masterpiece River Ridge. Your compassionate devotion provided her the opportunity to continue to enjoy the comforts of home beyond what she otherwise could have. We extend our heartfelt thanks. Walter Orest Franko, beloved husband of Doris Franko of Medicine Hat, passed away on Sunday, November 16th, 2014 at the age of 81 years. Mrs. Mary Rieder of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Mr. Leo Rieder, passed away on Wednesday, November 19th, 2014 at the age of 65 years. Mary leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Wanda Rieder of Medicine Hat; two grandchildren, Russell Floyd and Alisha; one brother, David Schorr; two sisters, Alma (Ray) Becker and Leah MacDonald; one sister-in-law, Maggie Bechal; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Leo; her parents, Christian and Christina Schorr; one son, Manny; one brother, Aurther Schorr; and two brothers-in-law, Emil Bechal and Norm MacDonald. Mary was born on January 22nd, 1949 in Medicine Hat. She met and married Leo Rieder in 1964 and they settled in Medicine Hat. Mary worked for K-Mart for 25 years. She loved camping, spending time with her family, friends and her dog, Tucker. Mary also loved to cook and entertain. Cheryl Ann MacKinnon of Medicine Hat, passed away on Wednesday, November 19th, 2014 at the age of 60 years. Cheryl leaves to cherish her memory one brother, Sandy MacKinnon (Janice), one sister, Val MacKinnon (Gord Stodolka), all of Medicine Hat; as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Cheryl was predeceased by her parents, Alex and Gladys MacKinnon; and one great nephew, Alexander MacKinnon. Cheryl was born in Calgary in 1954 and, in 1955, moved with her parents, Alex and Gladys, and her brother, Sandy, into their family home on Elm Street in Medicine Hat. She lived in the same home until she graduated high school and moved out on her own. Cheryl worked at the Petit dress shop where she met many good friends, but the best friends of all were Gertie and her husband, Dave. In 1980, she assumed a position at the Medical Arts Centre where she worked for many years. Cheryl’s final employment before her illness was doing food demos at various grocery stores. This is where she met her very close friend, Joyce Wagner, who has been there for her through thick and thin. During Cheryl’s illness, her neighbors, Sandy Beierbach and her late husband, Alf, helped her immensely. Sandy even got the Christmas decorations up this year early enough for Cheryl to enjoy them. Cheryl fought a long battle for several different types of cancer and through everything she still had a sense of humor. Her quirky nephews, specifically Shawn and Trent, could get her laughing until her stomach hurt. Cheryl will be sadly missed by all who knew her. A very special thanks to Elaine Meier who helped her with medical needs for months. Also a big thank you to Dena and the women who spent so much time with Cheryl. We know she will be with you all in your hearts forever. Thank you to all of Cheryl’s caregivers at the hospital and at St. Joseph’s Home for taking such good care of her. .This past Monday, family and friends honoured the life of a special lady, Frances Steinkey. The cold wind at the cemetery didn’t affect the warm hearts of her family as they laid their hands upon the urn and placed mom to rest. A service of remembrance followed in the warmth of Cook’s chapel where an illuminated angel globe and picture reflected Frances’ life… Father Le led the congregation in ministry with words of praise and comfort and daughter, Ethel spoke softly of the lady that was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother… the service came to a close and the chapel was filled with the sound of a touching song, “Walk In the World For Me”.

Aberhart “Abe” Ernest Beifus passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2014, at the age of 86 years, beloved husband of Lydia Beifus for 64 years. He also leaves to cherish his memory his children, Dennis (Barbara) Beifus of Medicine Hat and Sheril (Ken) Dietz of Sceptre, Saskatchewan; four grandchildren, Meaghan (Chris) Jenny (their daughter, Camille), Lesley Dietz (Steven Friedrick), Jennifer (Chris) Dietrich and Christa (Jay) Davis (their children, Paige and Alex); one sister, Gloria (Rudy) Klaiber of Penticton; brother-in-law, George (Margo) Serkasevich of Ponoka as well as several nieces, nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Pauline and Karl Beifus; his brother Eric and sister Erna Boisvert. Marci Ann Biedler passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 16, 2014, at the age of 41 years. She is survived by Blaine Nunweiler (his children, Brad and Cody), her dad Ken Biedler and step-mother, Linda as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She was predeceased by her mother Gail Biedler. Marci was an amazing person; she loved to dance, cook, garden and do crafts. She could do anything she set her mind to. 1940-2014
On November 15, 2014 Phyllis Marie Schorr (Franz) started her eternal life where she is joined by her perfect “blue skirt waltz” dance partner David Schorr. Her spirit is carried on by her: twelve children, twenty three grandchildren, one great grandchild, five siblings and extended family of relations and friends from every walk of life.
A celebration of life will be held in Elkwater as it is a place that was special to her and her family.
