Medicine Hat police and fire responded to a vehicle explosion in the Walmart parking lot Wednesday afternoon, believed to have claimed the life of one person.

At around 2:20 p.m., police and fire were dispatched to a vehicle explosion and arrived to a fully involved fire in a car parked at the end of Walmart’s lot near Tony Romas.

No one in the parking lot was injured but according to Sgt. Harley Kesler of MHPS, it’s believed there was someone in the vehicle at the time of the fire.

“We’ve talked to witnesses, there are some witnesses that advise that there was a person in the vehicle at the time,” Kesler said. “As part of that we do have an obligation to protect the privacy and interest of anyone involved.”

The exploded vehicle was covered in a tarp and had various statements written all over that Sgt. Kesler said they will dig into the history of.

“In relation to what you’re seeing on the vehicle, the markings on the vehicle, we don’t know to what extent that may be involved in this particular incident. But again we are in the early stages of the investigation,” Kesler said.

Police and fire were still on scene late Wednesday as an investigation is underway.
