Nominations open for MHC honorary degree

Medicine Hat College is seeking to recognize outstanding achievements of individuals who have contributed to the advancement and well-being of Medicine Hat and southeastern Alberta by conferring on an honorary applied degree at the college’s convocation ceremony later this spring.

Some notable past recipients of this honour are Bill Yuill, Dr. Larry Henderson, Austin Curtin and Dr. John H.M. (Jack) Snedden, just to name a few.

MHC vice-president of advancement and community relations David Petis says the annually-awarded honorary degree is intended to recognize the region’s best and brightest.

“We want to recognize those individuals that have shown themselves to be community leaders, and that over a lifetime of contribution and work have affected the economic, cultural or social well-being of southeast Alberta,” explains Petis. “It is important to us, our students and community to be able to celebrate those individuals who have made a true impact, whether over the short course in something monumental or over a lifetime of achievement.”

Nominations are open until Feb. 9. The college would like to encourage those with nominees in mind to send them in fairly quickly for the Board of Governors’ consideration.

“Our considerations come from on campus and community nominations,” Petis says. “One of the reasons I am happy we are speaking today is to get the word out that there are many people who make a difference in our community, and it can sometimes be overlooked … We want to recognize someone who has contributed to that broader sense of community well-being. Those that meet those large-sized standards we set as an example toward our graduating class and their families. To show that being from Medicine Hat or southeast Alberta can lead to an incredibly productive life.”
