A six-month sentence with 18 months probation was handed down to a Brooks man, who sold cocaine to an undercover police officer.

Valera Plaksin entered guilty pleas at the Medicine Hat Courthouse Tuesday to two counts of trafficking a controlled substance.

Plaksin was arrested in June after informant told police there were drugs being sold through a specific cellphone number. Using this number, undercover RCMP officers arranged and purchased $100 in cocaine, or 0.72 grams, twice from Plaksin in the span of one evening.

The 21-year-old has no drug record, and his involvement in trafficking was “middling,” said the federal Crown. Defence counsel says Plaksin has had addiction issues with drug and alcohol since he was 15, 16 years old. The sentence is meant to be rehabilitative, with counselling for addictions being a requirement of the 18 months probation.
