Ringette Roundup: Open B Smash capture provincial gold

The Open B Smash skated to a provincial gold over the weekend.

The Medicine Hat team was in Calgary for an eight-team provincial tournament, with four teams from the South, including the host, and three from the North.

The Smash went 2-1 in Pool A play, beating the Calgary Blitz 5-2, losing 7-6 to the RQB Twisters and beating the Calgary Defiance 6-2. In the crossover semifinal, they beat the top-seed Calgary Summit 4-1 to face the St. Albert Edge in the gold medal final.

In the final they trailed 3-2 with just over 10 minutes left on the clock. After a timeout, the Smash tied the game at 7:08 only for the Edge to take a lead with five minutes left. But Medicine Hat tied it up nine seconds later, and with overtime looming, Kayty Leidal scored the winning goal with just 53 seconds left for the 5-4 win. Hannah Thompson scored twice in the gold medal win, Leidal also had a pair and Sofie Kerr scored once.

The weekend’s gold was the Smash’s fifth provincial goal, adding a silver over the last six provincial competitions.

Over the weekend, Thompson had six goals and nine points. Kailyn Baum had five goals and eight points, Kerr had three goals and seven points and both Mahala St. Jacques (three goals, three assists) and Lindsay Hart (one goal, five assists) had six points.

Leidal added three assists to her weekend for five points, Heather Kempthorne had a pair of goals and assists and both Dee Karamanos and Allison Mason had a goal and two assists. Pacie Harper had a goal and an assist, while Ashlyn Seale had a goal and Abby Haney added an assist.

Tyler Leidal was in net for four games, Mark Fisher worked between the pipes in a game.

The Open B Smash will head to Montreal for a tournament May 8-10. Before then, they’ll continue playing, starting Saturday when they host Lethbridge for a doubleheader at the Kinplex. They’ll face the Open A and B Hybrid, starting at 2:30 p.m.

U16

The Medicine Hat U16B Mustangs captured provincials bronze over the weekend in Leduc.

On Friday, the Mustangs started off with an 8-6 win over Edmonton. Breanna Lanuk had three goals and an assist, both Lacey Gibney and Kassidy Etienne had two goals and an assist, Margot Kerr had a goal and an assist and Emma Pinnell was between the pipes.

The Mustangs played Lacombe in their second game, winning 10-7. Etienne had five goals and an assist, Lanuk had a hat trick with an assist, while both Kerr and Madison Helgeson had a goal and an assist. Four other Mustangs added assists, Jacquine Leblanc was in net.

On Saturday the Mustangs played Bow View 1, winning 7-2. Lanuk tallied her third hat trick of the weekend, adding an assist. Kerr and Gibney each had two goals and an assist. Onyka Funk, Van Maarion and Stodalka added helpers, Pinnell was in net.

In the crossover game, Medicine Hat faced Sherwood Park and won 10-4. Lanuk had four goals and an assist, Kerr had a hat trick with a helper and all three of Helgeson, Gibney and Etienne had a goal and an assist. Sloane Berstad added a helper and Leblanc was in net.

In the semifinal game Sunday, the Mustangs faced St. Albert, ultimately losing 6-5 in the shootout. Lanuk had her fourth hat trick of the weekend, adding an assist. Gibney had a pair of goals with an assist, both Funk and Berstad added helpers, Pinnell was in net.

In the bronze medal game, the Mustangs faced Bow View 2 and won 7-6. Gibney led the offence with a pair of goals and an assist, Etienne also scored twice. Kerr, Lanuk and Van Maarion each had a goal and an assist, Addison Mastel and Berstad added assists and Leblanc was in net.

U10

The Medicine Hat Mustangs U10 Step 3 team wrapped up their 2025-26 season at the Bridge Battle Lethbridge Tournament, competing in four games.

The Mustangs opened the tournament with a back-and-forth matchup against Calgary Bow View, narrowly falling 7-6.

Goals came from Miriam McClung (assisted by Gabriella O’Reilly), Gabriella O’Reilly (assist Lily Steiner), Everley Cross (assists Brielle St. Laurent and Lily Steiner), Harper Fuller (assist Ridley Trotter), Laila Loehndorf and Brielle St. Laurent (assist Everley Cross). Kylee Drever was in net for the Mustangs.

In their second game, Medicine Hat battled the Foothills squad but came up just short in a 5-4 decision. Everley Cross scored with help from Brielle St. Laurent, while St. Laurent added a goal assisted by Miriam McClung. Kylee Drever found the back of the net with an assist from Adelynn McKinley and Rozlyn Moch scored with Lily Steiner assisting. Laila Loehndorf was in net.

The third game saw the Mustangs take on the hosts from Lethbridge, falling 6-3. Goals were scored by Hudson Kerluke, Rozlyn Moch (assist Gabriella O’Reilly) and Laila Loehndorf, Ridley Trotter tended goal.

The Mustangs closed out the tournament with a final matchup against Lethbridge, falling 5-0. Kylee Drever was in net for the final game.

The tournament marked the final games of the Mustangs’ 2025-26 season, capping off a year of growth, teamwork and determination.

Active Start/Step 1

The Active Start and U10 Step 1 teams were also in Lethbridge for their final tournament of the season.

The U12C Mustangs head to Lethbridge this weekend for Regionals and the U12B Mustangs are in Calgary for Regionals March 27-29.
