During a recent professional development day teachers and staff of the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education rolled up their sleeves to give back to the community.
Several staff members spent the day on Mar. 6 preparing meals for the St. Barnabas Church’s Feed the Hungry program, the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society and the Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub.
Other staff members spent their day assembling “Blessing Bags” filled with essential items to be given to individuals experiencing hardships through the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Several teams from different schools also took to the streets to pick up trash around city neighbourhoods, while others volunteered time cleaning windows, pews and providing other maintenance at St. Patrick’s and Victory Lutheran churches.
The volunteer action falls during the season of Lent and MHCBE says teams remain dedicated to serving time to support local organizations and their neighbours.
“This day has become a favourite for many across the world as we engage in service throughout the community. We are reminded of the dignity of every person and the presence of Christ in each face we encounter,” said Heather Irvine, religious education co-ordinator. “By putting our faith into action, we live out our call to be the hands and feed of Jesus.”
MHCBE says service expands further than the one-day event, however the division hopes its efforts will remain a simple reminder that learning and faith extend beyond classroom walls.
