Local firefighters will brave the outdoor elements on the roof of Station No. 2 this April for the 17th annual rooftop campout in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
Each year local crews support the charity through the “Fill the Boot” or “Rooftop Campout” campaign that has become the largest national fundraiser for the charity that supports people affected by the neuromuscular disorder.
Funds raised support people living with Muscular Dystrophy, and the event is meant to raise awareness of the 160 different types of a disease that affects more than 50,000 Canadians.
Last year firefighters raised more than $13,300 to support Muscular Dystrophy Canada while spending an entire weekend on the roof of the station.
Although crews did not expect any snow last year, they did have to contend with strong wind gusts of up to 50 km/h reported throughout the weekend.
This year local firefighters will ascend to the roof on the morning of April 10 and will only come down on April 12.
Since the Medicine Hat Fire Services began supporting the annual campout in 1977 they have raised approximately $400,000 for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
