As more details emerge following a mass shooting that left nine dead and 27 injured in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. on Tuesday, Hatters are weighing in and offering condolences to the community.
“On behalf of our entire service, we extend our deepest sympathies to all those affected by the tragic events in Tumbler Ridge, B.C.,” reads a social media post from the Medicine Hat Police Services. “Our thoughts are with the families, friends, first responders and community members whose lives have been impacted by this heartbreaking loss.
“We recognize the profound grief and trauma such events cause and stand in solidarity with the community during this difficult time.”
The Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Service says their “Hearts are with Tumbler Ridge.”
The Medicine Hat Cubs junior hockey team posted a statement that reads, “In times like these community matters most. We stand with Tumbler Ridge.”
Mounties in the region expressed their condolences in a statement late Tuesday night.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred today in Tumbler Ridge. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, the students and staff affected and the entire community as they face an incredibly difficult moment.
We stand with Tumbler Ridge and will continue to support the community in the days ahead.”
Local school divisions have also reacted to the mass shooting and are offering students counselling services.
In Brooks, flags were flown at half mast Wednesday to honour the victims.

The Medicine Hat Public School Division released a statement Wednesday stating children who need support can reach out to their school councillors.
“Schools should always be a safe place for learning and growth,” says the division. “When security is compromised, we feel the weight of the loss.
“To our colleagues and friends in the North: please know that you are not alone. We are holding your community in our thoughts and hearts as you navigate this devastating situation.”
The school division has posted tips for parents on talking to kids on the tragic events provided by Medicine Hat Family Service and the National Association of School Psychologists.
The Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education offered a prayer for Tumbler Ridge and posted, “Today, we hold the community of Tumbler Ridge in our hearts and pray for all those affected by this tragedy.
Brooks-Medicine Hat MLA and Premier Daneille Smith released a statement online Tuesday evening expressing her condolences for the victims while praising first responders on scene.
“To the families grieving, the friends and classmates who are also impacted, and the first responders on the ground – know that Alberta and the whole of Canada is thinking of you and our hearts go out to you and your community.”
