A premier ski destination close to Medicine Hat has unveiled its new chairlift, expanding access to more than 20 new runs and a wide expanse of new terrain.

Castle Mountain Resort’s first high-speed chairlift is the largest infrastructure investment in its 60-year history, expanding lift-accessed terrain by approximately 25 per cent.

The lift was acquired from Sunshine Village in Banff in 2024 before undergoing a comprehensive retrofit. The lift will now expand service to areas previously only available for cat skiing operations, increasing the run count from 94 to 115.

“The introduction of our first high-speed lift is a major milestone for Castle and a meaningful step forward for the resort, said sales and marketing manager Cole Fawcett. “As we mark 60 years at Castle Mountain Resort, this investment reflects both how far we’ve come and out commitment to the future of the mountain.”

The new lift, the newly minted Stagecoach Express, is now the longest aerial lift in Castle Mountain’s network, at a length of 1,423 metres and gaining 558 metres of elevation. It travels at roughly double the speed of any existing, fixed-grip lifts at the resort.

Castle Mountain is Alberta’s second-largest mountain resort by acreage. Independently owned, the resort is celebrating its 60th season this year.
