A pair of Medicine Hat Mustangs teams won gold at a ringette tournament in Saskatoon this weekend.
The U12B and U16B Mustangs went undefeated to take first place at the City of Bridges tournament.
The U12B Mustangs opened the tournament with a 7-1 victory over Sherwood Park. Charlie Lowe led the way with four goals and two assists, Sloan Loehndorf added a hat trick and two helpers. Avery Fuller chipped in with two assists, with additional helpers coming from Fallyn Weeks, Ava Lanuk and Dylin Kerluke. Zayda Dawson earned the win in net.
Friday afternoon the Mustangs dominated the Saskatoon Riot, winning 14-2. Loehndorf recorded four goals and an assist, Lowe tallied three goals and three assists. Kerluke scored twice, with single goals coming from Fuller, Lanuk, Weeks, Isabelle Perrault and Zoe Aarden. Lanuk and Weeks each added three assists and Fuller, Katie Vis, Aarden and Kerluke recorded one assist apiece. Dawson stood tall in net again.
In their third game, the Mustangs faced Saskatoon Ignite and continued their offensive surge, winning 11-7. Lowe led the scoring with four goals, Lanuk and Dawson each added two markers. Fuller, Loehndorf and Weeks rounded out the scoring with singles. Loehndorf added three assists, Weeks chipped in two and Lowe and Fuller each had one. Zoe Aarden guarded the net for the Mustangs.
Saturday afternoon featured a showdown against the also-undefeated Regina Badgers. The tightly contested game remained close until late in the second half, when Loehndorf scored her second goal of the game, the eventual game-winner, to secure a 4-3 victory. Lowe scored the other two Mustangs goals and added two assists. Loehndorf and Weeks each had one assist and Dawson made several key saves to preserve the win.
In the gold medal final, the Mustangs took on the undefeated Regina Cougars. After a back-and-forth start, the Mustangs pulled away to earn the goal with a 7-4 victory. Aphten Myram opened the scoring with her first goal of the tournament, Lowe added three more tallies. Aarden, Loehndorf and Lanuk each scored once. Loehndorf contributed two assists, with Myram, Lowe, Perrault and Kerluke adding one each. Dawson was in net for the championship-clinching win.
The Mustangs return to action on Sunday, February 15, for league play in Indus and Rockyford.
The U16B Mustangs opened their tournament with a 7-2 win over the St. Albert Blaze. Breanna Lanuk had three goals with an assist, Lacey Gibney scored a pair and had a helper and both Madison Helgeson and Sloane Berstad added a goal and an assist. Margot Kerr and Jill Stodalka also had assists, Emma Pinnell was between the pipes.
In the Mustangs second game they came out with a 10-8 win over Lacombe Edge. Jacqueline LeBlanc was between the pipes. Lanuk had six goals and an assist, Gibney had a hat trick with an assist and Kerr tallied a goal and a helper.
The the third game, the Mustangs won 10-4 over Saskatoon Ringers. Lanuk and Gibney each had four goals and an assist, Stodalka and Kerr both tallied a goal and a helper. Pinnell played in net.
In the gold medal game the U16 Mustangs pulled out a 7-6 win over Bow View Wedge. Gibney notched a hat trick, Lanuk scored twice with an assist, Stodalka had a goal and an assist and Berstad found the back of the net as well. Pinnell was in net.
The U16B Mustangs have four players, Lacey Gibney, Breanna Lanuk, Jacquleine LeBlanc and Emma Pinnell, who are off to the Alberta Winter games this weekend.
The U16 Mustangs are off until Feb. 22 when they will take on Bow View 2 in Airdrie.
U12
The U12C Mustangs played a pair of home games on Sunday against NW Calgary.
The Mustangs swept both games, winning 12-2 in the morning game, with goals by Lexi Aldred, Ellie Weisgerber, Kimber Moch, Jayla-Ray Klaudt, Maizee Trotter and Addison Staheli, with assists from Eris Davies, Hailee Kopeck and Madeline McDonald.
The Mustangs won the afternoon game 18-6 ith goals from Lexxon Martinez, Rozlyn Moch, Aldred, McDonald, Staheli, Klaudt, Trotter and Moch. Nora Dunn stood in net for the pair of games.
U14
The U14B Mustangs travelled to Saskatoon to compete in the City of Bridges ringette tournament. With Grace Stirling in net, they finished 2-2.
They were defeated 16-7 by the Edmonton Vortex in the first game. Kassidy Etienne had a hat trick with Annabelle O’Reilly, Arika McDowall and Aleah Barretto assisting. Jorja Sadler recorded a pair of goals with assists from Etienne, Rhya Weinberger and Rielle Forsyth. Brinley Cross scored, assisted by McDowall and Haven Ward. Danalee Sawchuk also scored from Cross.
They faced the Sherwood Park Saints in the second game, winning 7-5. Etienne scored five goals with assists from McDowall, Sawchuk and O’Reilly. Sawchuk scored with an assist from Weinberger and Etienne. Sadler also scored, with an assist from Sawchuk.
They then beat the Saskatoon Rush 12-5. Etienne scored five goals with assists from Ward, Sawchuk and Cross. Weinberger got a pair of goals from Cross and Ward. Sadler also notched a pair of goals from Cross and Sawchuk.
Ward scored with assists from Etienne and McDowall. Forsyth found the back of the net assisted from Cross. McDowall also scored assisted by Etienne.
The final game was up against St. Albert Blaze for the bronze medal game. The Mustangs lost 11-4. Etienne scored a pair of goals, Sawchuk also scored assisted from Etienne and Cross found the back of the net, assisted by Sadler.
The U14B Mustangs travel to Calgary Feb. 15 for a couple of games.
U19
The U19B Mustangs traveled to Calgary on Saturday for a doubleheader.
In the first game against Bow View-3, the Mustangs got off to a slow start but battled back, skating to a tie. Ava Allchurch, Kendall Smith and Kasey Martin all scored and had an assist, Avi Velichko also scored. Leighton Wright had two assists.
The Mustangs skated to a 9-7 win over NW-3 in their second game. Ava Allchurch had four goals and two assists, Wright had two goals and an assist, Smith had a goal and two assists, Avi Velichko and Ryleigh Jackiw each had a goal and two assists.
The Mustangs finished the regular season with a record of 11-4-1, finishing third place out of 14 in the Chinook League. Next up for them is playdowns, game times and dates to be determined.
U10
Medicine Hat ‘s Step 3 Mustangs hosted a doubleheader Saturday against Lethbridge, with the visitors taking both games 5-1.
In the first game, Everley Cross scored the lone Medicine Hat goal, assisted by Miriam McClung.
The second game saw Adelynn McKinley find the back of the net for Medicine Hat, with Lily Steiner picking up the assist. Bailey Weeks stood in net for the first game and Ridley Trotter for the second.
