Members of the Gas City community rallied outside the Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA constituency office on Saturday to bolster ongoing recall efforts.

The event was part of a province-wide initiative, with various events happening around the province throughout the day. These events aimed to bolster morale for the nearly 30 active recall petitions currently collecting signatures, including efforts for Brooks-Medicine Hat MLA and Premier Danielle Smith and Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Justin Wright.

Roughly 30 people attended the rally in the Gas City, a welcome moment to reconnect with other organizers and reaffirm the importance of what they are doing, says petition applicant Heather Van Snick.

“This is about building community and building awareness about what’s going on in our province, so that people are understanding, so that they are well informed and can make an informed decision about what they want to do,” said Van Snick.

She says organizers are encouraged by momentum on the petition and are “digging their heels in and rolling their sleeves up” to keep things moving.

The rally was met with some minor conflict with passersby who disagreed with the presented message, but overall Van Snick says these rallies and protests are “always positive.”

“Everybody’s always excited to be together and to show their support for Alberta, for their community, and Medicine Hat,” said Van Snick.
