On Sunday fearless and perhaps slightly foolhardy Hatters will be jumping into freezing cold water for the annual Polar Plunge in support of Special Olympics Alberta.

The annual event held by the Law Enforcement Torch Run invites brave individuals to face the freezing cold waters while raising money for Special Olympic Athletes in the province who will be representing Alberta in the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games held in Medicine Hat this August.

At the time of publication, more than $10,000 has been raised locally for athletes, including more than $7,500 by teams already registered for the plunge.

Registration is still open for the event held Sunday at Athletic Park. Individuals can register online or in person beginning at noon on Feb. 8. The polar plunge is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

Registration is $50 per person and each participant will receive a $25 electronic tax receipt. Participants also need to be at least 16 years old and organizers of the event say costumes are highly encouraged.
