For more than 60 years young Hatters have been participating in a well-known free curling event aimed to encourage youth to try the sport while showing the basic concepts in a fun, competitive environment.
On Wednesday the city opened online registration for the 61st annual Jam Pail Bonspiel that will be held at the Moose Rec Centre in March.
Three registration categories are available; ages 7-9, ages 10-12 and an open category available for all ages.
Last year more than 600 students and members of the community took part in the 60th annual event, which famously allows dozens of students to play at the same time on modified sheets of ice using frozen ice jugs instead of curling rocks.
Children are able to form a team of four members, and typically dress up in costumes and wear whimsical clothing items with creative team names.
Each team will play three games which consist of five ends, or a maximum of 30 minutes.
The event runs Mar. 9-10, and typically each night the Bonspiel attracts more than 300 students along with their families who cheer on for support.
On day one, children aged 7-9 will compete against each other, while kids from 10-12 will hit the ice on day two. The open category is available on both days.
In the past the annual event was held during the February break, however organizers have pushed the event to March to allow more schools to participate during the day.
