Two Medicine Hat College sport and event marketing & management students are under the spotlight for their work promoting the latest edition of the Larry Godin Classic Sledge hockey Tournament held in January.

Students Hailey Grey and Jordan Hieb have been recognized for their project that proposed an entire marketing campaign for the 2025 tournament, by creating assets, static image posts, a video and suggested ad copy.

The students produced a campaign titled “heart, grit, and courage” that captured the tournament and were awarded a viewer’s choice from the organization for their work in brand identity and social media marketing design.

“I definitely gained practical skills with video editing and videography, but I am also very proud of how the project came together in the end,” said Grey. “I wanted to create a short video that would tell a story and build an emotional connection with the audience, and in the end, I think that was successful.”

The annual Larry Godin Classic, held each January at the Big Marble Go Centre, is a three-day tournament featuring sledge hockey teams from Medicine Hat and Calgary, and is held by Medicine Hat Adaptive Sport and Recreation.

“Our tagline of ‘Hockey Redefined’ represents what is truly happening on the ice,” said Hieb. “The way they can overcome their challenges and still be able to participate and compete in this league. I hope everyone can redefine their definition of sledge hockey and find a way to support this amazing organization.”

This year the tournament featured six teams as well as a matchup between local police officers and firefighters.

“With six local teams spread between the three divisions, Medicine Hat was able to support these players not only by watching games, but also making some amazing donations for the Adaptive Sports raffle table,” said Hieb.

Through the two-year diploma program, sport and event marketing & management students learn theory and gain hands-on experience planning and running events.

Students in the program have the opportunity to participate in work-integrated learning experiences, including sport and event fundraising and sponsorship, e-sports management and sport event media and public relations.

“Since this project, I have enjoyed creating graphics for other classes and my internship,” adds Hieb. “Because of this it may have created a full-time position for me to continue to make graphics for the organization.”
