Medicine Hat residents demonstrated their Canadian pride at the first opportunity to sign an official anti-separation petition.
Canvassers had to begin their day an hour earlier than advertised thanks to a large turnout, organizer Betty Aiken told the News on site, opening their tables to interested Hatters at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.
Since it was set up, added organizer Kym Porter, there had been a steady stream of people seeking to reach the goal of 300,000 signatures toward a referendum affirming that Alberta should remain part of Canada.
The group taking signatures Thursday largely consisted of members of AwareMHAB, also gaining two additional canvassers for the day, and it is estimated they were able to collect 1,787 signatures while gathered outside city hall.
Any businesses or events interested in hosting a signing location, indoors or outdoors, are encouraged to reach out to AwareMHAB on Facebook.
The next public signing event for Hatters will take place Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., out front of Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Justin Wright’s office at 1299 Trans-Canada Way.
